The math nobody shows you

A $60 cake feels like double the grocery bill.

The receipt says $34, so $60 looks like a profit. But the receipt isn’t the whole cake. There’s the board and the box, the topper, the drive, and the six and a half hours you spent on it, counting the shopping and the dishes.

Put a modest $20 an hour on that time and the same cake costs about $200 to make. Priced at $245, it pays you and leaves a little for the next mixer. Priced at $60, you paid to bake it.
